Your home network is the foundation of your smart home. If your Wi-Fi, Control4 system, security cameras, intercom, streaming services or air-conditioning controls stop responding, you may need to call in a Sydney network communications specialist for support.
But did you know that a simple network reboot can often restore normal operation?
A proper reboot means turning the main network equipment off, waiting briefly, then turning it back on in the correct order.
In this guide, the Crown Electrical Solutions team will walk you through the entire process of rebooting your home network system, and share some key tips to help you prevent further issues from arising along the way.
Your step-by-step guide to a home network system reboot
Step 1: Locate your network equipment
Your network equipment may include:
- NBN connection device (also called the NBN NTD)
- Modem
- Router
- Network switch
- Wi-Fi access points
- Any plug-in power supplies connected to your network equipment
These devices are often located in a communications cabinet, data rack, cupboard, garage or study.
Step 2: Turn off the network equipment
Turn off the power to the NBN NTD, modem, router and any network switches.
If your Wi-Fi access points have separate power supplies, turn these off as well.
Do not press the reset button on any device, as this may clear settings and cause further issues.
Step 3: Wait 30 seconds
Leave the equipment powered off for approximately 30 seconds.
Step 4: Turn the NBN NTD and modem back on first
Turn the NBN NTD and modem back on and allow them to fully start up. This can take several minutes.
Wait until the lights on the NBN NTD and modem have settled before moving to the next step.
Step 5: Turn the router back on
Turn the router back on and allow it to fully start up. This can also take several minutes.
Step 6: Turn on switches and Wi-Fi access points
Turn on any network switches and Wi-Fi access points.
Step 7: Wait for devices to reconnect
Wait at least 5 minutes for your Wi-Fi, smart home automation systems, cameras, intercoms and other connected equipment to reconnect.
Some systems may take longer to appear online after a full network reboot.
