What Is Circadian Rhythm?

Circadian rhythm is your body’s internal 24-hour clock, regulating sleep, energy, hormone release, and more. It’s influenced primarily by light—cool, blue-rich light in the morning helps wake us up, while warmer tones in the evening help us unwind. Artificial light can disrupt this cycle, but smart home lighting can bring it back into balance.

How Lighting Affects the Our Natural Rhythm

Smart circadian lighting changes both brightness and colour temperature to reflect the natural progression of daylight. Regular dimming doesn’t change the tone, but circadian lighting shifts from cool (6500K) to warm (2700K) across the day to support your wellbeing.

For a regulated circadian rhythm, we want to see certain levels of light at particular times of the day. Optimum lighting exposure would be:

  • Morning: Exposure to bright, cool-toned light (around 6500K) helps activate your body and mind, signalling it’s time to wake up and start the day. This type of light suppresses melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep, and enhances alertness.
  • Afternoon: During the midday and early afternoon, natural light maintains consistent energy levels and alertness. Light exposure in the afternoon can also regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to focus and remain productive throughout the day.
  • Evening: Time to switch to warmer, dimmer light. This tells your body to prepare for rest by gradually increasing melatonin production. Dimming the lights and using warmer tones (around 2700K) promotes relaxation, helping your brain transition into sleep mode.

Imagine the world before electricity. You naturally learned to wake as the sun rose and would head to sleep as the night drew in. Nowadays, the existence of artificial light can disrupt our circadian rhythms because we’re seeing light at the wrong time of day. Circadian rhythm lights can combat the disruption and ensure that we’re exposed to the right levels and types of light at the right times.

Automated circadian rhythm could look like:

  • Smart lighting that adjusts throughout the day
  • Automated blinds and curtains
  • Temperature control to support sleep
  • Sunrise alarm clocks
  • Soundscapes for stress relief

Smart Home Integration

Using systems like Control4, KNX, or DALI, smart homes can automate circadian lighting based on time of day, sunrise/sunset, or personalised routines. You can also control it manually via an app, keypad, or voice assistant. Increasingly, we’re seeing smart homes that go beyond lighting for circadian wellness— enhancing sleep quality with regulated temperatures and customised soundscapes.

Room-by-Room Application

  • Bedroom: Wake gently and fall asleep naturally.
  • Living Room: Adapt lighting for comfort or activity.
  • Home Office: Maintain alertness and focus.
  • Bathroom: Use soft, non-disruptive light at night.

Health & Wellness Benefits

  • Better sleep quality
  • Increased energy and alertness
  • Improved mood and focus
  • Reduced digital fatigue and eye strain

FAQs

1. How does circadian lighting differ from regular dimming?
Circadian lighting changes both colour and intensity, while dimming just reduces brightness. Colour temperature is key for supporting natural sleep-wake cycles.
2. Can I still override the schedule?
Yes! Use your mobile app, smart switch, or voice assistant to adjust lighting as needed.
3. What if I have limited natural light?
Smart circadian lighting can simulate natural daylight, especially useful in windowless rooms or during winter months.
4. Does circadian lighting only affect sleep?
No, it also improves energy, mood, and mental clarity throughout the day.
5. Do I need to change all my lights?
You can start small, like the bedroom or home office, and expand as needed. It’s flexible.
6. Will this work with my existing smart home setup?
Most systems are compatible or upgradeable. Crown Electrical can help assess and integrate into your setup.
7. Can circadian lighting help with shift work or jet lag?
Yes! By customising your lighting schedule, it can help reset your internal clock to match your routine.
